OHSWEKEN, Ontario – (September 15th, 2006) – Kyle Patrick and Justin Barger won feature events during a wild night of racing during the “Night before the Nationals” presented by native poker.com Friday night at Ohsweken Speedway that kicked off the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend.
Patrick dominated his feature event after a crash took out Dustin Daggett and Chuck Hebing while they were racing for the lead. Barger battled Ken Mackey through lapped traffic and held off a late race charge by Brock Mayes to win the second feature. With their victories Patrick and Barger secured guaranteed starting positions in the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals on Saturday night.
In the first 15 lap feature Hebing and Kevin Job started on the front row.
Dustin Daggett immediately moved up from fourth starting spot to challenge Hebing for the lead. With one lap in Daggett and Hebing were going through turns three and four when the duo made contact, sending Hebing into a wild flip in turn four. Both drivers emerged uninjured, but Hebing’s car was destroyed in the incident.
The beneficiary from the incident was Patrick who had raced from his original eighth starting position into the lead for the restart. From there Patrick destroyed the field lapping up to fifth position during the 15 lapper. Job, Jason Barney, Bobby Breen, and Nick Mulheim rounded out the top five.
After the race Patrick was pumped up about his feature win.
“It feels good to finally get (a win) this year,” said Patrick in the pit area after the race. “We’ve been so close this year to winning several features and haven’t been able to finish them off. Tonight we finally did it.”
In the second 15 lap feature Barger and Ken Mackey started on the front row.
Barger led the first lap, but Mackey came back on lap two to retake the top position. Mackey held the position until he was picked by a lapped car that allowed Barger to retake the lead.
After a short caution for Bryan Howland’s broken front end Mayes moved up from fifth starting spot into the second past Mackey and set sail after Barger.
Mayes’ teammate Dale Blaney also moved into the top five.
On Lap 12 Brad Knab flipped over the turn two wall. Knab emerged from the wreckage uninjured.
Barger was strong on restarts and was able to pull away from Mayes and hold on for the feature win. For Barger the win was accomplished using a car the team did not plan on using on Saturday, but after Friday’s performance Barger was not sure which car they would use.
“I’m actually thinking about using this car now,” said Barger in victory lane.
“(The crew) and I will have to talk it over.”
Heat race events were won by Fred Cade, Hebing, Daggett, Glenn Styres, Mayes, and Barger.
In the Village Pizza Ohsweken shootout Daggett started on the front row and led all 10 laps in the special event for all the top four finishers in special events held for the Southern Ontario Sprints, Sprints on Dirt, Patriot Sprints Group, and Empire Super Sprints.
Justin Harris and Mike Farrell flipped during hot laps. Tim Philips flipped in the second heat race and Lee Stark took a wild flip out of the track in turn two during the third heat. All the drivers emerged uninjured.
